Boiler Service: Why It’s Important

Why it is important to have a boiler service carried out

Just like you would service your car, you should service your boiler. Think about just how much time you and your family spend at home every day. You and your loved ones will require daily hot showers and baths. As well as daily heating and hot water for all sorts of things.

Just like you rely on your car, you rely on your boiler. Just as you would miss your car being off the road, you would certainly miss your boiler not working in your home, whether in the summer or the winter.

An annual service can prolong the life of your boiler. Having parts checked over and replaced if necessary once a year can ensure you suffer no serious complications with your boiler down the line.

Not servicing your boiler can lead to a potentially very dangerous situation. Boilers involve gas and fire and so if not serviced regularly, your boiler could impose the threat of a gas leak and/or carbon monoxide poisoning, which can lead to fatalities.

What to expect with a boiler service

When performing a boiler service there are a number of factors taken into account and have tested.

During your boiler service, the gas engineer will carry out a visual inspection of the boiler. This involves checking that the boiler still meets the most up to date standard. The gas engineer will look for any leaks or signs of corrosion. Another thing the engineer will visually inspect is the flame in the boiler.

Next the gas engineer will remove the boiler casing. This is so the engineer can check the components within the boiler to ensure everything is working how it should. These checks will involve looking over the heat exchanger, burner, spark probe and the injector.

A flue check will also be carried out. It is important that the flue is safely fitted and so the engineer will check for this. The engineer will also check that the flue terminals are free of any obstructions.

To ensure the boiler is working at the correct pressure, the gas engineer will carry out a gas pressure check

One of the final checks is to fire up the boiler, this will show any working faults.

Who should carry out a boiler service?

Only a Gas Safe Registered engineer may carry out a boiler service. Gas Safe Registered engineers have completed vigorous training and exams. This training is carried out by approved Gas Safe training providers and the exams are awarded by the awarding Gas Safe body and the Health & Safety Executive.

A Gas Safe Registered engineers training also never ends. As these engineers are dealing with gas, there are new regulations coming out all the time. As such a Gas Safe engineer must complete top up training and pass additional exams on a yearly basis.

All of this combined ensures that only the very qualified and experienced gas engineers can inspect your boiler, carrying out annual services and completing any gas work that may be required.
