Why You Need A Gas Fire Service

Why A Gas Fire Service Is Important

Having a gas fire service carried out by a registered Gas Safe Engineer could save a life.

Many homes have gas fires, they’re warm and cosy to sit in front of on a cold winter’s evening. The ambience is just perfect, snuggling up on the sofa and reading a lovely book or watching your favourite TV shows, we completely get it.

You’ll probably use your gas fire only half of the year, so you probably don’t think it’s worth getting it serviced. Well that’s where many people are mistaken. A gas fire can be very dangerous, more so even than not servicing your boiler regularly.

The major risks of a faulty gas fire can be the same as those for a gas cooker. The common denominator being gas leaks. As well as carbon monoxide poisoning and even explosions.

Why You Need Your Gas Fire Services Annually

  • The Gas Safe engineer will need to check the flue on your gas fire. This is to ensure it is not blocked. If it turns out the gas fire flue is blocked, this can be very dangerous. As it means that toxic fumes cannot escape, and so the toxic fumes will be coming back into the room. Therefore whoever is in the room will be breathing in those toxic fumes, which can have a huge affect on ones health.
  • All pipework will need to be checked for any gas leaks.
  • The ignition will need to be checked to ensure there is no soot build up. If there is soot build up, this will need to be cleaned and the ignition checked to ensure it’s working correctly.
  • All parts of the gas fire will need to be stripped and cleaned. As well as checked thoroughly for any wear and tear.

Who should carry out work on a gas fire?

Only a Gas Safe Registered engineer may carry out work on a gas fire. Gas Safe Registered engineers have completed vigorous training and exams. This training is carried out by approved Gas Safe training providers and the exams are awarded by the awarding Gas Safe body and the Health & Safety Executive.

A Gas Safe Registered engineers training also never ends. As these engineers are dealing with gas, there are new regulations coming out all the time. As such a Gas Safe engineer must complete top up training and pass additional exams on a yearly basis.

All of this combined ensures that only the very qualified and experienced gas engineers can inspect your boiler, carrying out annual services and completing any gas work that may be required.

What to look for when choosing the gas fire engineer in Medway

When choosing the right gas fire engineer in Medway, you need to ensure he/she is Gas Safe registered. You can do this by checking the Gas Safe register and entering the engineers Gas Safe number.

Check a gas safe number

You will want to know whether the gas engineer has much experience. Ask the engineer how many gas fires they have installed. If the particular engineer you are speaking with has not installed many gas fires, ask if he/she will be supervised by an engineer who is experienced.

At Super Trade Services our senior engineers have more than 10 years experience of servicing gas fires.

You can also ask to see photographs of the engineers previous work to build a picture of the quality and standard of work. Most gas safe engineers will have this displayed online either via a gallery or social media, such as Facebook or Instagram

Another way to gain trust in your engineer is to take note of their reviews. Does the engineer have consistent 4 or 5 star ratings? Are the ratings from Medway based residents?

By doing your research, you will be able to form a good picture and understanding of the engineer and whether they will be good to carry out work on your property.
